My first http log post

mtime: 2023-08-30

Well, hello, dear reader!

If you’re reading this, more things have gone right since the last time I wrote. My initial post made using this tooling was only posted on my gemini capsule, though.

Well, let me explain what’s changed regarding this ‘blog generator’ in the past 3 weeks (since I wrote the gemlog post).

Generator changes

Not much has changed regarding the main generator. I’ve fixed some errors, removed some redundancy, most of the changes aided by the guidance of shellcheck. It was my first time productively using the shellcheck tool. I recommend it if you’re writing any shellscript longer than 5 lines.

Other than that, I ended the gemlog post talking about my intention to write an atom/rss feed generator, and that I’d probably do it in python… Well, I didn’t do that. I wrote it in bash, again. I want to thank and bring your attention to blogs and people whose work I’ve relied on to write the atom_gen.sh bash script that I now use to generate the feed of this log.

These are the commendable folks:

There might be more, but I can’t recall them at the moment, I’ll add more if I recall them later.

The process of writing that script was easier than I expected, considering it wasn’t my first attempt. lowdown together with its documentation was a great help, as well as w3’s atom feed validation services and its documentation. Writing an atom/rss feed generator is a great beginner shell scripting project.

What’s going to be where

I’ve decided I’ll keep the web log and gemini log split, and I think the split might even have utility. The web side of things will be mainly a weblog, together with a simple gallery page and a few other links, while on the gemini capsule, I intend to keep sharing the kind of information I’ve been sharing there already: TV show’s i’m watching and my opinions on them, a table of movies I’ve seen and my scoring of them, lists of my hardware and other tools/toys that I use and enjoy, and also log posts that I’m more comfortable sharing only with people who don’t mind spending some time and effort to reach the gemini-verse :)

Regarding that, I’ll probably write a short weblog post explaining the curious, but uninitiated how to get into gemini space. It’s easy and pretty rewarding, a lot of talented and curious people are sharing their thoughts and creations on there.

And a bit more information about the feed

Now, I thought a bit about the feed, and I decided not to split it. There isn’t a dedicated feed with only the gemlog entries and another one with only the weblog entries… All the entries are on the same feed. Also, the feed is full content. You can read all the precious opinions and discoveries made by yours truly from the comfort of your favorite feed reader (I recommend newsboat on linux and feeder on android).

Setting up a feed reader would be another interesting topic for a post, but we’ll see if I ever get around to writing it.

There ya go

That about sums up the changes regarding this little personal oasis. There isn’t much friction to get in the way of writing content now, but lack of obstacles never stopped me from underachieving my goals!
